Guide to Radiators & Cooling
The following information may be helpful in selecting and using cooling system parts for conversion purposes. You should keep in mind that there are so many variables involved with the process of cooling an engine that it's impossible to use hard and fast rules, but if you apply the following principles, you will be able to make the right decisions to add to the reliability and longevity of your Jeep® vehicle. Overheating should not be a problem on a conversion if some basic principles are followed.

Heater Blower Motor Upgrade
The Chevy Blazer heater motor upgrade for Jeep CJs and Wranglers has been bouncing around the Net for as long as I can remember. It is remarkably easy and it greatly increases the air flow through the heating system. When my heater core began leaking like a sieve, I figured it was a good time to do the upgrade.

This upgrade works for '78-'86 CJs as well as '87-'90 Wranglers. Some of the CJs built in 1977 used the old style heater housing with the heater motor behind the dash. I haven't heard of anyone doing this upgrade with the old style heater housing or with a Wrangler built after 1990. Any 1977 CJ with a heater motor sticking out of the fire wall will be able to do this upgrade.

Howell TBI for Jeep CJ
Tired of your carburator? I sure was. I was sick of being left high and dry on steep inclines too. Here's how to put a Howell Throttle Body Fuel Injection on your 258. Even early model YJ's will benefit.

Hydraulic Clutch Conversion
This hydraulic clutch setup (MC, slave cyl. & hose) was original equipment on a
1980-83 GM (Non-AMC) 4 cylinder jeep engine.

The components are readily available from parts stores and FWD catalogs.
Some bracket fabrication is needed for mounting the slave cylinder on CJ-5 and V-8 installations.

PARTS MIKE sells conversion kits for both CJ-5's and CJ-7's as well as a nice stainless hose.

Installing Buick & Chevrolet Engines into Jeep CJ2A & CJ3A
Generally, a V6 is a better fit than the Small Block V8. Consider the Buick or Chevy V6's for a sensible, sanitary, powerful and non-invasive swap. However, the following information will apply to Chevy and Buick swaps of either variety. The Buick engines fit better because of their lower profile, generally.

Installing Buick and Chevrolet Engines in the Jeepster Commando C101, 1966-1971
These were built on a CJ6 frame but have somewhat different drive-in components than the CJ5/CJ6. Four-cylinder versions of the C101 always used a Model 20 transfer case and "centered" rear end. The early versions had a Spicer 30 rear end (model 21 front end). The model 30 rear end was prone to failure. Later models solved this problem by using a Spicer 44 rear end. The front axle was a Model 27.
Includes info on mounts, placement, transmissions and exhaust.

Installing Buick and Chevrolet Engines in the Jeepster Commando C104, 1972-1973
These were built on a CJ6 frame but have somewhat different drive-in components than the CJ5/CJ6. The tread width increased, GM Saginaw steering (manual or power), bigger brakes and many other changes were introduced in 1972. The things most relevant to an engine swap were the longer engine compartment for the six-cylinder, and the indroduction of the Spicer Model 20 transfer case (a first for short-wheelbase Jeeps) with the "centered" model 44 rear end.
Because these 1972-75 Jeeps had a V8 option, they are simple to convert to Chevy V8 power. We advise the use of strong V6's in these vehicles due to the greater weight and higher gearing of these Jeeps. Using the proper adapter and our #29 universal side mounts, along with the stock rear cross member mount, will get the Chevy engine in place. If the Jeep engine was a six-cylinder and the Chevy is going in with the original Jeep transmission, the radiator will have to be moved back to accommodate the shorter V8 engine.

Installing Buick and Chevy Engines in the Jeep CJ5 & CJ6, 1955-1971
Still enormously popular Jeeps for GM conversions are the classic CJ's of the Willys and Kaiser eras.
Generally, a V6 is a better fit than the Small Block V8. Consider the Buick or Chevy V6's for a sensible, sanitary, powerful and non-invasive swap. However, the following information will apply to Chevy and Buick swaps of either variety. Iron Duke four-cylinders are also an option in these Jeeps, as they use a Small Block style bellhousings and therefore, the same adapter assembly.

Installing Chevrolet and GM Engines into the Jeep CJ5 & CJ7, 1980-1986
The last era of the CJs saw the introduction of the Model 300 transfer case. This was the final and arguably the best of all the Jeep transfer cases. Production of the 258 straight-six continued. Two four-cylinder engines found their way into the CJs starting with the GM 151 c.i. Iron Duke until 1983. From 1984 ‘til 1986, it was supplanted by the AMC 150 c.i. which, in different tune, is in production to this day. It is closely related to the 258 and now the 4.0L. All critical dimensions within the engine bay for these CJs are essentially the same as the post-1976 models.
