Installing Rock Lights
Have you ever been out 4 wheeling at night and found yourself in a tight spot, whether it be a boulder under the pumpkin or a rock under the transfer case? Well, say goodbye to those long nights by installing a set of rock lights. A great set of rock lights can be installed for less than $100 and a couple of hours. These lights will take the guesswork out of 4 wheeling at night and they will really save your buddies the headache of having to get in and out of the rig to check your line or to see if you're going to bottom out and bash some of those expensive components.

IPFs new 968 series lights
Finally, an affordable high-performance-oriented off-road light! Ever since we first installed the Garvin Safari Rack on our TJ in the fall of '01 we've wanted to put a set of four lights on it, we just never found a set that we liked that didn't cost an arm and a leg. The "economy" offroad lights just didn't offer the output and beam pattern we wanted, and the lights that did were too expensive to buy 3 pairs of them at once (2 pairs on the rack with a matching 3rd set on the front bumper).

LED Backup Lights
I finally finished it....well, the backup lights that is. It has taken me well over a year and I finally decided how I wanted to mount the lights. Many thanks to MikeW for his donation of a spare set of white LED lamps. I probably would not have gotten off of my butt and did it had it not been for his generous offer. Thanks Mike!

OK....it was a cool Monday morning and since I've made it a decade long practice of never working at my job on Monday, I decided it was time to do something on the Jeep, the backup lights. I had been over to Mike's the previous Saturday and we had finished up his Hi-Lift jack mounting and kicked around some ideas for the last part of my ARB manifold project. I had gotten the lights from him and decided then I better get this part of the project done. Letting those lights sit on my work bench would not be a good thing.

I did not wish to flush mount the lights into the corner guards.

LED Flush Mount Tail Lights
With my Toys by Troy corner guards installed, it was time to think about putting some flush mount tail lights on the back end of the TJ. Dirk Sanders, of DPG Off-Road, hooked me up with some new 4" LED tail lights, made by American Superlite, Inc. Model SL4000 is a red stop, turn, and tail light assembly. The unit has 15 LEDs, an operating range of 12 ~ 38 volts, and meets FMVSS 108 requirements (a DOT standard that specifies requirements for original and replacement lamps, reflective devices, and associated equipment). I opted to mount the lights using the Model 40400 black grommet.

Before I get into the install details, I have to tell you about a phone conversation I had with an employee from American Superlite. I sent them e-mail last week after reviewing their on-line catalog (hoping to find the mounting hole specs for the rubber grommet mount). Failing to receive an answer to my e-mail, I called the company. To make a long story short, the employee I spoke with didn't have a clue as to the hole size I needed. I find it funny that they publish the dimensions of the LED assembly itself, but no guidance for installing it. Oh well, I used the trial and error method on a piece of cardboard and got a working pattern to try on the TJ.

Lights Out
Noticed your headlights don't seem to be lighting the way, check it out, you may have a light out. No need to take it in to a mechanic or dealer, what I will impart is some basic run throughs for those who have never picked up a screw driver, by the way, if this isn't you, move on to another story, but for those of you just getting into 'self maintenance' of your Jeep vehicle, here's the deal.

Off-Highway Lights
With Schematics
There are a few ways of doing this (schematic 1). Using an off-the-shelf relay, fused power (connect a fuse right after the battery) is connected to terminal #30. Connect one wire from your lights to terminal #87 and the other to ground (preferably directly to the battery).

Offroad Light aiming
Traditional fog lights are usually mounted under the front bumper about 10-24 inches from the ground. There are two important issues to address when installing fog lights, the first is to minimize the amount of return glare into the drivers eyes, and the other is to minimize glare into oncoming eyes. Both of those issues must be accomplished while putting as much light as possible on the road.

Rock Light Installation
I decided to install “Rock Lights” on my 99 TJ. I started by doing a search on Google, and the discussion board at 7slotgrille. I looked at every web site I could find. I also discussed it in the 7slotgrille.com and Jeepaholics.com chat room. Thanks to all the Jeepers I chatted with and whose web sites provided info and Ideas.

I started by obtaining 4 12v work/utility sealed beam lights from the local Napa auto parts store (p/n 50-620w-3). I also obtained a 12v 30 amp relay from Schucks auto supply (this relay has 2 output blades instead of just one, which if I use the lights for repairs after dark I can unplug the side I am not using and save the battery). I used 14 gauge wires from each light to a junction and then ran 10 gauge wires to the relay. I located the relay on the passenger side wheel well utilizing a hole where the air box used to be bolted down. The power to the relay for the load runs through a 30 amp inline fuse for over current protection. I routed the wires as carefully as possible to try to avoid the hot components of the exhaust system on the passenger side.

I placed the front lights up under the front of the fenders right below the turn signal enclosure, this lights the front of the tire as well as the pumpkin so a spotter can see the stuff hopefully we won’t be damaging anymore.

Rock Light Installation
So here you sit, on a difficult trail, night is rolling in, and you are not rolling out fast enough to beat the darkness. As darkness sets in, you turn on your headlights. You come to a tough portion of the trail, your spotter gets out and immediately asks you to turn out your headlights because you are blinding her. Your spotter asks you if you have a flashlight, and being the well prepared Jeeper you are{semicolon} you whip out the handy 100 D-Cell wonder light that has been in your toolbox ever since you bought your Jeep. You hand it to your spotter and she turns it on. The wonder light casts a dim yellow glow under your vehicle... enough to illuminate the boulders over six feet tall{semicolon} but not good for much else. 6 hours, one broken axle, two trashed differential covers and a bent tie-rod later (you were lucky), you exit the trail. After you replace all the damaged parts you broke on the trail{semicolon} you swear you are going to install rock lights before you go out on another trip.
