In our quest to upgrade out TJ's sound system without spending big bucks, we decided the cheezy factory 4x6's in the dash had to go. We'd originally planned to put in a set of Boston Acoustics 4x6's until I stumbled across the first offering from 33-Engineering (OffroadToyStore's fabrication division) -- 5.25" speaker adapter plates for TJ's. You have to buy or fabricate adapter plates to fit aftermarket 4x6's anyway, so why not upgrade in the process! 5.25" speakers not only sound better than 4x6's, there's also a wider selection of 5.25" speakers available, and they'll generally be better quality than 4x6's. And at $25 a pair, these speaker adapter plates were a no-brainer.

Dash speakers
Well, I had upgraded the soundbar speakers. They sounded great, but they were grossly overpowering the stock 4x6" speakers in the dash. I found a store online that sold adaptor plates which allowed 5 1/4" speakers to fit up there.
I decided to go with 5 1/4" Pioneer 3-ways. I figured the extra highs up front would compliment the midrange and bass I had in the soundbar. It was a fairly easy install. The speaker mounted to the plate and the plate mounted to the vehicle. The directions with the adaptor plates mentioned a support bar on each side which needed to be removed. I was happy to find they didn't exist on an '02 model, so no cutting necessary.

Ipod mounted in a wrangler
Anyone use their iPod in a Jeep Wrangler?

I do... I just installed everything in my new '04 Rubicon.
I used my PIE adapter from my WJ and nstalled it in my TJ. It converts the changer input into RCA's, and then I used a Monster Cable RCA --> headphone jack. I ran the audio out the defrost vent and used my Power Pod w/ the IPod cable in the cig lighter, returned the cable immediately into the dash and up through the defroster.
I used some 3M wall hooks, cut them down w/ a Dremel and superglued them to the underside of the dock. This allowed the dock to sit at a slight angle, which puts the IPod almost vertical and clears the cables above the back of the sunglass tray at the top of the dash. If you remove the rubber tray liner up there, you can use the adhesive from the hooks right to the dash. It's almost a perfect distance away, and I barely have to take my eyes off the road to use it.

Soundbar speakers
It's a well known fact stock speakers are cheesier than kraft mac & cheese. I decided to upgrade the 5 1/4" soundbar speakers first because they're the biggest. I was glad to learn that most 6 1/2" speakers will bolt directly in without modification. I decided on Infinity Reference speakers.
The install wasn't as smooth as I'd hoped. These particular 6 1/2's would not bolt directly in. However, I found that the mounting plates they came with would. So, I screwed in the plates then installed the speakers onto those. The only problem was, doing it this way didn't allow the grilles to be fitted on. I decided to live with this and have actually come to like the look of the solid white speakers against the black soundbar.

Subwoofer under the driver's seat
I didn't want to give up ANY space to a subwoofer (including the center console) so I installed a Kenwood Woox powered sub under the driver's seat.
