Intro to Basic CB
Our attempt is to help newer people not familiar with CB radios to not be intimidated by the technical details of purchasing, installing, and using a CB radio. This write ups is meant to be general in nature, and may not apply to some applications. We hope this will be helpful, though.

Important General Basic Idea: It is a fact that an inexpensive radio and good quality antenna system will out perform an expensive radio, and mediocre antenna system. Keep in mind that the antenna system really is about 90% of the overall performance of the system we are attempting to put together.

CB Radio RF Noise Suppression
The following dialogue occurred with John, a JU member that I was exchanging on-line posts with while he was attempting to reduce the RF noise in his TJ when he was installing his CB radio. With his permission, I am including it here since I believe it is both valuable info and it gives others a glimpse at just what can be involved in trying to clean up a noisy RF environment in a vehicle. Considering that entire books have been dedicated to the subject, this is just a short review of the things that were done. Please note that some of this is as much magic as it is science....by that, I mean that what may work great for me does absolutely nothing for you and your Jeep's CB radio.....or worse yet, you do it and it makes things worse. There are so many variables in the equation that you must understand that any one or a combination of these tricks (or others not listed here) may be just the cure for your noisy radio.

CB/Ham SWR Meter Operation
Your RadioShack CB/Ham Field-Strength SWR Meter helps you tune your CB or
amateur radio system for the best performance.

CB and amateur radio systems work best when the antenna system's impedance
matches the transmitter's output impedance as closely as possible.
The meter's standing wave ratio (SWR) function helps you trim your antenna
to the precise length you need for the maximum transmitted power.

The meter's field strength function helps you position your antenna for
the best coverage and determine the effectiveness of changes you make to
your antenna, antenna cable, and transmitter.

Carefully read all of these instructions to get the best use from this
meter.

Cobra 75 wx install & wilson antenna
After a trail ride with the handheld CB, I was convinced of two things:

* the CB is an essential tool for traveling in groups on the trail
* the handheld was a lot better than nothing, but did not have the range needed for any communication beyond several hundred yards

I knew it was time for a permanent mounted CB

External CB speaker using the TJ audio system
In researching options for placement/wiring/amplification of an external speaker for my CB it occurred to me that the existing vehicle sound system is an obvious choice. This writing documents the installation of a Wireless CD Adapter for broadcasting the output from a CB external speaker jack to any FM radio receiver. These adaptors are commonly available for playing portable CD/MP3 players through a vehicle'&s sound system with no physical connection to same. Here is the parts list (available at RadioShack):
