Narrowing a Dana 44 Front Axle To Fit a CJ
I started with an axle housing from a narrow track '78 Cherokee. I have since learned that a better choice would have been an axle Wagoneer or narrow track Cherokee with disc brakes produced from 1974 to 1977. The reason these axles are better than the '78-'79 axles is completely in the outers. The inner axle shafts and housings itself are the same. The earlier disc brake outers have the correct spindle to use F-150 hubs and rotors and they have the flat top knuckles that are desirable for high clearance steering conversions. It is possible to gather the knuckles and spindles from other sources, but it is more convient to get them in one package. Domain: http://www.4x4wire.com Rating: (0/5)

Painless Axle Shaft U-Joint Changing
Changing front axle shaft U-joints, what could be simpler? If you are asking that question you have obviously never dealt with severely rusted joints from an older street driven Jeep that's never been in 4wd and has an open knuckle front end. Domain: http://www.4x4wire.com Rating: (0/5)

Posi-Lok Install
The Cherokee and Comanche vehicles were the first in a trend that has continued at Jeep through today. Gone were the locking hubs and 5 on 5 ˝" bolt pattern of the previous generation of vehicles. In their place came a 5 on 4 ˝" bolt pattern without hubs. To keep the front axle assembly from spinning constantly, which results in decreased mileage and increased wear, a coupler was added to the long side front axle shaft. This coupler is controlled by a vacuum source and disconnects the two piece axle shaft when in two wheel drive. Fortunately, there is a solution. 4x4 Posi-Lok manufacturers a cable kit that replaces the vacuum actuator and allows the driver control over locking the coupler on the front axle shaft. Powertrax Lock-right Locker install in a Dana35
I called a few auto shops last week to see how much they'd charge me to install a locker. I didn't call a 4x4 shop, just your typical neighborhood shops. No one would do it! Hmmmmm. It couldn't be that hard. I didn't want to spend a bunch of money (which is why I didn't call a 4x4 shop to begin with). I called Randy's Ring and Pinion to see what they recommended. Some day I'd like to build the ZJ up for serious off-roading, but for now I wanted something cheap to put in an axle I wasn't planning on keeping long term. Lock-Right was the quick answer, it's dependable, it's price was right (around $240 bucks), and it's easy to install. I ordered it. Then I got online and had trouble finding how-to's on this particular installation. I ran across a seemingly good article, but it ended with a worthless locker spinning and grinding in the rear diff.. yikes! I wasn't following their install notes!
So here we are. I received my locker, read through the instructions. Domain: http://www.4lo.com Rating: (0/5)

Prepping a Waggy Dana 44 for a YJ
When I went looking for a 44 front end to swap into my YJ. I had heard a lot about Wagoneer 44’s due to their perfect width and very decent strength. A donor vehicle ended up being a 1978 Wagoneer with a 401 ccd AMC engine. This is the main reason that they used a Dana 44 front end in this truck…lots of torque from that motor coupled with the weight of that vehicle makes it obvious why it is a natural swap into a lightweight (by comparison) YJ. Roll Full Floater for Dana 44 with Tapered Axles
When I picked-up my 1970 CJ5, the tapered axles were on my worry list. The passenger side axle creaked every turn. It would stop if I squirted it with a little WD-40. When I went to tighten the nut, I found some gorilla mechanic had cross threaded the nut and stripped the threads. A new nut might only buy me time but I did not want to spin an axle. When opportunity arose, I decided to put in a full floater. Domain: http://www.earlycj5.com Rating: (0/5)

Roll Your Own Full Floater for Dana 44 With Tapered Axles
When I picked-up my 1970 CJ5, semi-affectionately called Polluto, the tapered axles were on my worry list. The passenger side axle creaked every turn. Save some money on ARB air valves
How to save some money on ARB air valves.
These valves were actually made by Mac Valves. ARB now uses a different airvalve that connects via a manifold setup to their compressor.
Since my MQ was set up with a Thomas air compressor in the days prior to ARB having their own compressor, I decided to use the MacValves since they suited my application better and had mounting holes.
Visit MacValve's web site to find a distributor near you.
While researching and purchasing components (in the US) to add a front locker to my oz MQ patrol (already having a rear ARB locker), I found the following information. Domain: http://george4wd.taskled.com Rating: (0/5)

Setting Up a Differential Ring & Pinion
Setting up a differential is probably one of the most under-rated jobs that a mechanic can tackle. I have seen many mechanics "slap new bearings in" or "throw a new gear-set in" a rearend, and then take it to our shop to let one of our technicians "set it up" so it won't make noise. "Setting up" a rearend, involves so much more than merely replacing parts, and installing them without any regard to the tolerances that the "parts" must be held to. Proper setup requires patience, cleanliness, and attention to detail. Domain: http://www.thedirtforum.com Rating: (0/5)
