GREEN WINCHING
Current recommended practices for electric winches.
1. DRIVE-ASSISTING
Drive assisting always results in more damage. On steep inclines the ground will torn up leaving a loose surface for the next vehicle and take a long time to repair itself. Drive-assisting will create dust, flying stones and noise. Wheels spinning and engine racing will let everyone know your are there. Drive assisting in mud is an even worse sin, because by doing so the wheels dig you in deeper. If you allow the wheels to free-wheel, or gently rotate them you would climb up and out of the mud.

Ground Anchor
Military Issue Ground Anchors: These were made to screw into the ground to a depth of 16". Shaft that goes into ground is heavy-duty galvanized 1/2" diameter with a 3" diameter auger plate that screws down in to ground to make it almost impossible to pull out. Hard Wired Winch Control
Hard wiring an in-cab switch for you winch is well worth it for convenience and reliability. Sometimes, when you need your winch, you don't want to spend time digging through your winch accessory bag for your controller. You might not want to crawl out and plug in the controller or route the controller cable back to the cab. Most likely, you want to get out of a bad situation as fast as possible. An in-cab winch controller can be a big time saver when seconds are important. You can stay in the driver's seat and run the cable in and out while someone else sets the cable. Hi-Lift Mount Part II "The RELO"
Well, here we are again on the Hi-Lift install. This time around I had to install the jack on the front bumper, because I just recently installed a new rear bumper from COMP4X4. The installation is straight forward and is even easier than the rear bumper hi-lift install. Basically follow the instructions I used for the rear bumper install and you will have no problems. Hydraulic H12 or electric, you decide
A WINCH IS RATHER LIKE A FIRE EXTINGUISHER, absolutely useless if it doesn't work when you really need it and just as useless if it only puts out half the fire. If you are going to the expense and trouble of fitting a winch to your 4x4, it needs to work every single time, Domain: http://4wheeldrive.about.com Rating: (0/5)

Hydrualic Winch, front and rear
When I started shopping for a winch I had a long wish list of what I wanted.
First I wanted a winch that not only would take me through an obstacle in the forward direction but would extract me from a spot I shouldn’t continue through. Yes, I've been places where I wished I could just back out. Domain: http://www.off-road.com Rating: (0/5)

Installing a MileMarker Hydraulic Winch
Well, the winch debate is a tough one. It is almost as hard a decision as building a rig with either an automatic or manual transmission. Both have positives an negative aspects. The same goes with winches, in regards to hydraulic or electric powered winches. The point of this tech article is not to debate the arguments of electric vs hydraulic, but rather to pass along my first hand experience with my MileMarker 9000lb 2 speed hydraulic winch. Jacking
By far, the best jack for four wheel drives is the Hi-lift type. It can lift virtually any vehicle and, with the aid of chains, it can be used as a winch.
The standard jack supplied with most four wheel drives can only raise the vehicle sufficiently to change a tire on paved roads or hard packed surfaces when the vehicle is not bogged. They usually rely on placing the jack under the vehicle in special spot on the frame or unibody. If you try using this type when you are bogged to the chassis in sand or mud you'll understand why it's quite inadequate.

KINETIC ENERGY and RECOVERY
Kinetic energy can also be defined as mass * height * gravity . The easiest example for this is a seemingly harmless bucket full of bolts and spares stored on the top shelf in your garage, being full of static energy. As long as it stays there, it is completely harmless. BUT when this innocent looking bucket of bolts is put in motion by, for instance, the Land-Rover Laws Of Gravity, static energy in this bucket is immediately transformed into Kinetic Energy, which can be a killer Domain: http://4wheeldrive.about.com Rating: (0/5)
