SYNTHETIC WINCH ROPES
The use of non-wire ropes is a fast growing trend amongst off-roaders. They were originally employed for safety reasons, on the basis that when they broke their low mass caused them to drop to the ground, rather that take your hand off. Other attributes are that they are easier to handle, possible to repair by splicing, when they break and the 10kg or so weight saving on front overhang meant that had less of an effect on the vehicles handling, compared to the heavier wire rope. However, there are a few disadvantages. Domain: http://www.4x4winches.com Rating: (0/5)

TJ MM Hydraulic Winch install
Superior Jeeps are built with superior components. This was my thinking when I bought a Rubicon, and I will work from this premice over the entire build up of Project Rubi. With this in mind I set out to find the ultimate winch. I've heard all the arguments for and against electric and hydraulic winches, and although electric winches have served me well for many years I decided that only a Mile Maker hydraulic winch was capable of meeting my needs for Project Rubi. There are many reasons why I made the switch from electric to hydraulic, and here are a few:

Tow Hook Reinforcement
You can achieve a much stronger attachment of the tow hooks,
by adding a reinforcement plate, behind the frame rail.

Tow Straps & Hooks
A tow strap is a very useful device made from nylon webbing. It is stretchable under tension. A tow strap allows one vehicle to assist another through a difficult spot from a distance of 20 or more feet away. By connecting the strap between the two vehicles, quite often winching can be avoided. When attaching the recovery strap to a vehicle, always use the towing hooks. Underhood Hi-lift Installation
This is just a quick rundown on the latest tinkering I did yesterday. Keep in mind that putting the jack under the hood will only work if you have the 48" version.
Items needed:
u-bolts - 2"x5/16" stainless steel - 2 total
rubber tie down - 8" - or the equivalent (velcro straps work well too)
rubber tape - used as anti-chafing wrap on the radiator support rods
1. Open the hood and lay it back all the way to the windshield. Disconnect the battery terminal - even though this job has nothing to do with the electrical system it's always a good practice to get used to do doing. Besides, after you pull the terminal, you'll want to lay something over the battery to keep from bumping the jack against the top (I just used an old flannel). Using a Hi-Lift Jack
I’ve been using a Hi-Lift since I was a kid in the Everglades. We used them to lower the swamp buggies and airboats off the trailers and to pull them back on. We used them to lift the big swamp buggy tires onto the rigs and for a great many other tasks. I have been using the jack for 4WD recovery ever since. Earlier this year, I was lucky enough to meet the great people at the Bloomfield Manufacturing Company in Indiana. They gave me a warm welcome and a fun, educational tour of the factory, and reinforced my strong feelings about this well-made and invaluable product. Domain: http://www.4x4now.com Rating: (0/5)

Warn 8274 Winch Rebuild
I scored an older Warn 8274 8000lb winch for $200 and decided to completely strip and rebuild it
A lot of people have contated me and asked what the process was that i used to clean up the winch - apparently I did a pretty good job! What Idid was as follows:
* The main aluminum housing I painstaking cleaned with a rotary wire brush in an air powered die-grinder, as well as using small wire brushes, gun cleaning bore broshes, Q-tips, brake cleaner, and compressde air for the tight spots. When I was done I sprayed it with some clear coat from a spray can
* The removable parts - drum, brake assembly, etc. I cleaned up with wire bruch and brake cleaner and then painted them with Bowman Industries industrila anti-rust coating (paint!) in "Detroit Diesel Silver"
* The motor I cleaned up as above, and pinted with flat black paint.
That's it. Really, I just took my time and enjoyed the process. Good luck! Domain: http://www.pirate4x4.com Rating: (0/5)

Warn X8000i Winch CJ Install
After 4 years of modifications to my CJ I have reached the readiness for a winch. After additions like lockers, tires, transmissions, etc. I realize that my Jeep can take me further than ever before. A winch is an item that truly compliments a Jeep in both appearance and function. It offers a sense of security and confidence when off-roading. Domain: http://www.offroaders.com Rating: (0/5)

What not to do with a tow strap
Please study this photograph carefully; notice the eight inch nylon strap, ¼ inch thick, out the rear of the Jeep. See that it comes through the rear window, then through the driver’s seat, then out the front windshield. Notice that the holes in the seat and the windshield are relatively clean.
