Bantam Jeep History
Despite over 50 years having passed, many people are still able to recognise a WW2 jeep, most referring to it simply as a 'Willys'. It is likely that they therefore also believe that the ubiquitous jeep with its unmistakable grille must have been conceived, designed and built by Willys Overland but the reality is somewhat different. It actually owes its existence to the American Bantam Car Company and the genius of Karl K Probst.

Dating a CJ-3B by Interior Details
The CJ-3B was produced almost unchanged by Willys Motors and Kaiser Jeep for nearly fifteen years. But in cases where the original serial number is lost, or someone is trying to determine if a part is correct for a particular Jeep, there are some clues to determine at least the approximate year of production. This page covers the interior of the Jeep.

Early CJ Drain Hole Plugs
Eventually anyone looking at an early civilian Jeep will notice holes in the sides just about next to where the driver's and passenger's outside foot would rest on the floor. They are roughly three-quarters of an inch in height and three inches long. These holes through the sides are not found on military versions of the Jeep, nor are they found after the production of the CJ-3B ceased in the mid-1960's. After researching them, the author found rubber plugs made for the drain holes.

Jeep CJ-3B Fire Engines
Willys fire Jeeps were given their own series of serial numbers starting in 1955, when both a CJ-3B Fire Engine and a CJ-5 Fire Engine were offered. A handful of each were produced every year until 1961, when a record 65 CJ-3B units were built. A total of 102 CJ-3B factory fire engines were produced in those seven years.
