Drivetrain Maintenance
After searching my archives the other day I realized that I have never addressed the maintenance of your vehicle's drive train ... you know, the system that transfers power from the engine to the drive wheels. Maybe a simple diagram will help you understand the flow of power that moves your car.
Engine --> Transmission --> Differential --> Drive wheels
Now let's take a brief look at the different types of transmissions and differential systems and their required maintenance.

Engine Braking
Normally, on steep descents with a manual transmission, the best technique is to shift to a low gear and descend using engine compression to slow your descent, keeping your foot off the brake. T Domain: http://links4jeeps.com Rating: (0/5)

Flipped Dana300 Transfer Case with Teralow
While my built up NP231 transfer case was a good transfer case, I wanted more strength. I also wanted to retain the 4 to 1 low range that the Teralow in my NP231 gave me. I looked around and, at first was interested in the Atlas II by Advanced Adapters. This is a very nice case, but at around $2100 for the 4.3 to 1 model, it was out of my price range. Then, I found out about the Dana 300. Domain: http://homepage.mac.com Rating: (0/5)

Front axle Home made disconnect
Eliminate the vacuum engaging each and every time you hit 4wd, this way before you enter the trail you can connect the front axle (way the newer front axles are) and then have a very fast and smooth 4wd shift.Get large amounts of torque while in 2wd Tight turns you can disconnect the front axle while keeping it in low range to make a tight turn, as opposed to having to stop, shift back to 2hi, make the turn, stop, then shift back to 4lo. You have a welded front diff you can unlock it on the road and on turns while in 4wd. Domain: http://home.earthlink.net Rating: (0/5)

Hydraulic Clutch Systems
A hydraulic clutch "linkage" system is like a simple brake system. It has a master cylinder to provide hydraulic pressure, tubing and a flexible hose to carry the hydraulic fluid, and a slave cylinder which operates the release fork and release bearing.

Jeep Transmission Swapping Guidelines
Over the years, Jeeps have come from the factory with some great transmissions and some terrible transmissions. In some cases a different transmission can be the best upgrade to your Jeep as far as performance and reliability. What transmission you select to put in your Jeep depends on what you find and what you have. We'll assume you are keeping your engine and transfer case and that you already have a manual transmission. Also, keep in mind these are my opinions of what will be the cheapest and easiest swap for most people. Domain: http://www.jeeptech.com Rating: (0/5)

Klune-V Extreme Underdrive 4:1 in a Cherokee XJ
Having 4:1 gears in the transfer case is in style these days, and for good reason. The extra reduction really comes in handy during steep, technical maneuvers. On the other hand, I really like the stock 2.72:1 low range in my NP231 transfer case. Swapping out the standard set of gears for a set of 4:1 gears would take away the 2.72:1 option. If I had to choose one low range only, I would pick 4:1 because I use it far more than the other. However, I like 2.72:1 better for many milder four wheeling trails. I estimate I use the transfer case 2.72:1 low range about a third of the time. Adding the Klune-V gives me the option of either low or super-low range, plus I have the option of compound 11:1 ludicrous-drive! Domain: http://www.4x4wire.com Rating: (0/5)

New Process Model 231 Transfer Case Specs & Info
The Jeep NP 231J was introduced at the 1988 model year in both the XJ Cherokees with the Command Trac option and the standard YJ Wranglers. Later to be called the NV (New Venture) 231J, this transfer case has continued in the trend of chain-driven cases. Its low gear is a respectable 2.72-to-1 (the lowest of all the Jeep transfer cases with the exception of the NP241OR) and is direct-drive in high. It has a driver's side front output.
This transfer case is identified by its red and silver tag on the rear of the case. There are also very similar versions of the 231 for the downsized Chevy Blazers and Dodge Dakota trucks. Heavier-duty HD and DHD units are available in ZJ Jeeps and Dodge trucks, respectively. OEM 231 transfer cases are capable of transferring from 1600 to 1900 ft. lbs of torque. The RockTrac features a 4:1 low gear ratio acheived through planetary reduction. Front axle power transfer is chain drive and it is direct-driven in high range. It features a driver's side front output. Domain: http://www.novak-adapt.com Rating: (0/5)

NP231 Transfer Case Upgrade to NP231HD w/JB SYE
My new NP231HD (aka: NP231DHD) is a zero-mile unit originally manufactured for full-size Dodge trucks. It came from JB Conversions who bought the cases directly from New Venture Gear. JB then added their short shaft kit (SYE) and converted the shift sector from Dodge to Jeep. The transfer case's Heavy Duty designation is because of the large syncro hub and wider chain, 1.5" compared to the Jeep 1" width. In addition, I had JB Conversions switch from the stock 3-gear input pinion to the stronger 6-gear pinion. This new NP231 transfer case is the strongest it will ever be.
