Deflating with Stauns

Everybody always says in order to gain traction while 4wheeling you should lower your air pressure for a wider foot print. Obviously you can simply push in your valve stem and down goes the air pressure. There has be a better way of doing this.

I decided to give a set of Staun Tyre Deflators a try. Yes Tire is spelled wrong. They are an austrilan company. I contacted FatBoysOffroad.com and had them shipped to me within days. From what I can tell you simply screw them on and they lower down to a preset air pressure. Ah HUH sure they do. I bet they are a pain in the butt to set and use.

Tools: Time:
Deflat a tire with an object 10-15 minutes

I did the following below on my front right tire and each of the 4 deflators are easily set from the lowered tire. If you have any questions or comments about this install visit

First I established my normal running pressure

I used a screw driver to lower my pressure. Normally I use the back of my valve stem cover.

I lowerd my pressure down to 12psi

This is what the Staun deflator looks like preset from the Staun.

Step 1.

To adjust the deflator loosen the jacking collar all the way down.

Step 2.

Tighten down the cap all the way against the jacking collar.

Step 3.

Screw on the deflator until its seated. Turn the cap until it begins to leak air. As soon as it begins to leak air turn it back to stop it.

Step 4.

Adjust the jacking screw up to the cap to secure it into place.

Step 5.

This is how it should look when its properly set and tightened down. Repeat Steps 1-5 for each Deflator.

If you install a deflator and it does not activate because you are within 3psi of the preset pressure you can force the deflator to activate by pulling the center plunger.
An idea that I had and it seems to work pretty well so far is to take 3 of the deflators and set them to 12psi. I then set the 4th deflator to 28psi. Why 28psi? I inflate my tires back up to aproximately 30psi screw on the 4th Deflator and it lowers my tires back down to my normal running pressure. Ok, maybe later I need to add more air due to heat or cold. Install the deflator and pull the pin if within 3psi and it lowers down to 28psi. Sure I can use a pressure guage, but isn't the idea of using these little marvels to save time, well to save time. =)
