Tuffy Glove Box into a TJ

Driving around in my 00 TJ I came to the conclusion that there is absolutely no security in my Jeep when an ordinary screw driver could rip open my glove box and center console. So I decided to purchase a Tuffy Glove box.

Tools: Time:
Phillips screw driver
Short Phillips screw driver
7/16 inch wrench
60 Minutes

First you apply the felt padding with a adhesive backing to the outter edge of the glove box.

This is what it looks like when you are complete. Don't worry if you mess up Tuffy supplied lots of extra material.

Remove all of the screws around your old glove box. Do not forget to remove the two screws holding the latch in place at the top.

First I started by wiggling the glove box frame into place and loosely inserting the top screws on the top right and left.

The two holes at the top where the old latch was takes two screws as well.

Tuffy thought of everything on this install. There is a pre drilled hole in the latch bracket so you can feed a screw driver in to tighten up the top two screws.

Simply insert each screw in each hole, but do not tighten any of them. The instructions even state the same fact. I ignored the instructions and as you can see from the photo I had to take all of my screws out because when you tighten there is no room for movement.

This is a shot of the old latch below and the new Tuffy latch above. You can see there is no comparison here.

Ok, I lied the latch shown in the pictured before is the latch bracket. This is the latch. Its heavy duty and requires two 7/16 screws to hold it in place. Theres even a little tamper shield just incase somebody tries to pick the latch.

Unlike the stock glove box which used a strap to keep it in place. The Tuffy box uses two adjustable wing nuts in the back.

This is a side shot latch.

This is the box with the wing nuts all the way down allowing the glove box to droop so you dont have to remove it each time you want to access it. However since it swings down you will have to empty each time unlike the stock box.

Notice how the Tuffy box frame and hinges account for the stock hinges. I was worried when I ordered I would have to remove or cut the old hinges off. Another smart idea on behalf of Tuffy.

After installation I noticed a small gap on the right side of the box opposed to the left side. At first I was worried, but just handling this box I knew any thief would be in for a tough pry if they attempted.

Overall I like the box and I even read somewhere there is a color called machine gray that matches the gray interior of my TJ. I guess I'll have to find out and give it a coat or two. .
